![]() But when the "detective" is instead trying to compose a satisfying story, the same mental processes and logical puzzles are involved as in a traditional mystery, but at the end the reader is not left with the feeling that the solution was contrived by the author. One of the problems with mysteries, in my opinion, is that the detective's reasoning is too fine all it takes is the slightest irrationality on the part of a criminal, or the slightest error of judgment on the detective's part, and the solution falls apart. But it turns out that the truth was one of the simpler stories that the snake god had rejected, and the protagonist knew this-she was just trying to find a lie that would satisfy him. The snake god accepts her answer and she departs with his gratitude. The protagonist suggests multiple explanations, each of which the snake god rejects as irrational in some respect, until she hits on a convoluted story that the god finds compelling. For instance, a snake god asked the protagonist to find out why a murderer had disposed of her victim's body in the snake god's pond. Instead her goal is to produce a satisfying story. She usually knows the truth already, because she can talk to ghosts and demons, who are always happy to tell her what they know. (So far, there is one long arc that spans several volumes, and there are eight or so smaller mysteries of about a half-volume each.) But it departs from the ordinary mystery "formula" in two ways.įirst, the protagonist's goal is rarely to uncover the truth. Spectre emanga series#The fundamental concept is a series of mysteries. ![]() As far as I know, its premise is unique in any medium, not just in manga. But I feel confident that's coming (and may even already have happened in the 4 remaining English volumes that have currently been released). The fantastic elements of In/Spectre somehow add to her plausibility as a character.Īt this point, my only criticism is that I would like for Kuro's character to be explored in the same depth as Kotoko's. And Kotoko is totally unlike any other fictional detective, but she's the most compelling one I've ever read. They're genuinely excellent (and I say this as a huge fan of mysteries). The mysteries in In/Spectre are unlike anything you'll encounter in any other manga-or, for that matter, in any novel, film, or show. The substance of my original review (below) still accurately describes my impressions, but I'm increasingly impressed by the quality of the writing, the intricacy and soundness of the mysteries, and the characterization of the main protagonist. ![]() I originally gave In/Spectre a 9/9/8.5, for an overall rating of 9. Update: after making it through volume 11, I'm revising my opinion upwards. ![]()

Meanwhile, performing a range of law enforcement roles that might require more specialized equipment and tactics, SOBR forces can be likened to SWAT units in American policing.Īside from beating the locals into compliance, OMON and SOBR units equipped with machine guns and light-armored vehicles often patrol some of Russia’s more volatile regions, like Chechnya or the North Caucasus. In Putin’s Russia, where displaying a sign that reads “No War” can be grounds for treason, the availability of a full-time riot squad is a necessity. OMON units serve primarily as riot police, rapidly deploying to quell any unrest that might threaten civil order. ![]() In Russia, SOBR and OMON serve as a paramilitary police force akin to a gendarmerie, under the jurisdiction of the National Guard or Rosgvardia. Another estimated 20 were members of the “Spetsial’niy Otryad Bystrovo Reagirovaniya,” “Special Rapid Response Unit” in English, typically known by the moniker SOBR. However, of the Kemerovo crew, roughly 60 officers are believed to have been part of the “Otryad Mobil’nyy Osobogo Naznacheniya,” or “Special Purpose Mobile Unit,” better known as OMON. The exact number remains obscure, thanks almost exclusively to draconian measures imposed by the Kremlin to keep troop losses from being exposed. The starring cast for this bizarre story involves a group of roughly 80 men from two specialized police units from the Kemerovo towns of Krasnoyarsk and Novokuznetsk. Steel from the Novokuznetsk Iron and Steel plant alone helped produce over 50,000 tanks and 45,000 aircraft for the Red Army in World War II. This is the incredible and tragic true story of a small group of Russian riot and SWAT cops who tried to storm the Ukrainian capital by themselves. The narratives provides an almost humorously macabre window into how what was once viewed as the 2nd most powerful military in the world ended up limping away from the Battle of Kyiv in humiliating defeat after only a month. POW interviews, conversations with various Ukrainian sources, family members, and open-source information, intermixed with some reasonable speculation, however, offers a more comprehensive understanding of one of the most bizarre and largely overlooked events in Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The simple answer is staggering incompetence. Why did an odd medley of Russian riot police pull a real-life Leeroy Jenkins on the 2nd day of Russia’s invasion? Unfortunately for the ill-fated lawmen, they happened to be arriving at this awakening outside the most dangerous place in the world to be a Russian soldier: the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv. The officers had known it conceptually, but now as the noxious fragrance of human conflict wafted over them, war’s reality became unmistakable. ![]() They say it’s not the sights or sounds, but the smell that first traumatizes those thrust into war. The only verdict is vengeance a vendetta, held as a votive not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin, van guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the “vox populi” now vacant, vanished. Voila! In view humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate. : But on this most auspicious of nights, permit me then, in lieu of the more commonplace soubriquet, to suggest the character of this dramatis persona. : Of course you can, I’m not questioning your powers of observation, I’m merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is. : Who? Who is but the form following the function of what and what I am is a man in a mask. And in this, she finds what V calls "freedom.V. At last, she admits, she is no longer afraid to die. Her eventual escape only leads her to a more awful place, imprisoned and tortured. While V is hunted by a decent cop Finch (Stephen Rea), he keeps Evey at his secret lair, where he makes her tea and eggs for breakfast. While the movie allows that torture only reproduces terrorism and violence, it also presents V's scheme as revolutionary and effectively symbolic. V's rage is fueled by the usual superhero's past trauma. Out after curfew, Evey (Natalie Portman) is about to be raped by some bad cops when V appears, kills them, and initiates his instruction of the vulnerable Evey in his anarchistic plot. The underlying, irresolvable question has to do with terrorism: why and how are people pushed to commit it, and what might it achieve, aside from fear and oppression? Can calculated violence, ever, as its proponents argue, lead to "freedom"? At the center of is masked terrorist V (Hugo Weaving), who battles against a very corrupt British regime. More generic action movie than philosophical investigation, V FOR VENDETTA focuses on a young woman's political education. It explores the actions people take (supporting it, accepting it or resisting it or fighting against it). Ultimately, it's a political film about extreme governments and their players: from the head of the government on down public workers. Some of it is generalized, like what you would see in any action film or video game with guns, and some of it is up close (the context is revenge), so, its disturbing, but not gory (some blood, no guts). Showing this in the political context is important. The torture is emotionally intense, but limited. There isn't any on-screen sexual violence, but the threats of it are present, as in real life. ![]() (But if your child is interested in these topics he/she may really enjoy it.)Ģ)Sexual violence/Torture.
